Safety is in Our Blood
At Sailendivers, we’ve been passionate about scuba diving since our founding, offering top-quality gear from trusted brands like Atomic, Zeagle, BARE, Sharkskin, Hollis, and Oceanic, along with personalized training and unforgettable dive trips. As a full-service dive center in the Jakarta area (with roots tracing back to North America in 2007), we live and breathe the underwater world every day.
But no matter how stunning the reefs or how advanced the equipment, safety always comes first—it’s our absolute top priority. We never compromise on it, whether we’re guiding beginners on their first open water dive, outfitting experienced divers with premium regulators and BCDs, or organizing group trips. Safety isn’t just a checklist for us; it’s the foundation that lets everyone enjoy the ocean responsibly and return home safely.
Here’s what we always emphasize and make our core focus when it comes to scuba diving safety:
- Never Hold Your Breath – Breathe Continuously
This is the golden rule of scuba diving (straight from PADI standards and every training program we run). Holding your breath while ascending can lead to serious lung over-expansion injuries. We drill this into every course and remind divers before every descent: breathe normally and continuously, just like you’re breathing on land.
- Stay Within Your Training, Experience, and Comfort Limits
We see too many incidents when people push beyond what they’re certified or comfortable with. At Sailendivers, we always advise: dive within your certification level, don’t exceed recommended depths without proper training, and speak up if conditions feel off. Your safety stop at 5 meters (15 feet) isn’t optional—it’s essential. Proper weighting is key too: we help you get it right so you can hover effortlessly during safety stops with ~500 psi left in your tank.
- Dive with a Reliable Buddy – Never Alone
Solo diving has its place for advanced divers with specific training, but for most of us, the buddy system is non-negotiable. Agree on hand signals, emergency procedures, and dive plans beforehand. Your buddy is your first line of backup—check on each other regularly. We prioritize buddy awareness in every briefing and gear fitting session.
- Thorough Pre-Dive Checks and Gear Maintenance
Rushing is one of the biggest risks. We insist on a full buddy check every time: BCD inflates/deflates properly? Regulator breathes smoothly? Computer and gauges working? Weights secure? Air turned fully on? At our store, we service gear rigorously and encourage regular maintenance—your equipment is your life support.
- Plan the Dive and Dive the Plan
Know your depths, times, currents, visibility, and exit points. Assess conditions before entering the water. We cover this in every trip we organize and every course we teach. Panic often stems from poor planning—staying calm comes from preparation.
- Equalize Early and Often + Monitor Your Health
Ear barotrauma (“squeeze”) is one of the most common issues—equalize gently before you feel pressure. We also stress physical and mental fitness: no diving if you’re under the influence, unwell, or overly fatigued. Decompression illness (DCI) and other issues are preventable with conservative profiles and proper hydration.
Prioritize Calmness and Slow, Controlled Actions
Most accidents trace back to stress or panic. We teach skills to stay calm: slow breathing, controlled ascents (no faster than 9-18 meters per minute), and knowing when to abort a dive. Your safety > looking cool or keeping up with the group.
